Frequent Asked Questions

Q1. Will the Cipher3 system restore the hard drive password after access?

A1. In most cases Cipher3 will restore the original password to the hard drive at the end of access, this is an operator command facility and option. The exact situation varies with drive manufacturer and model.

Q2. After unlocking the hard drive can I run my normal drive imaging program on the drive?

A2. Yes, all normal HDD imaging files can be used on the unlocked HDD.
 
Q3. Does the Cipher3 hard disk cracker write to the hard drive?

A3. Sometimes. Generally the hard disk manufacturer writes the password to the platters on the hard disk, hence to unlock and relock the password it is necessary to clear and rewrite the password on the platters. This is the only area of the hard drive that is accessed by Cipher3.

Q4. Will there be updates to Cipher3 as new drives become available on the market?

A4. Yes, Cipher3 has a policy of continuous development and upgrade. We will periodically advise all users of updates by email. Please contact us if you find a drive that cannot be cracked, we would like to know the manufacturer, model number and size of the HDD.

Q5. Does the Cipher3 system crack desktop 5.25or SCSI hard drives?

A5. No, at present very few desktop PCs or desktop HDDs support hard drive password locking so Cipher3 does not support unlocking these. We can however provide a desktop HDD unlocking service, please contact Risk3 for details. We do not currently support SCSI HDDs.

Q6. My PC does not have a RS232 serial port, can I use a USB serial port adaptor?

A6. No, a trueRS232 serial COM port is required by the Cipher3 system. These can be purchased as add-on cards for your PC at little expense.
